"Can I fly, Mommy? Can I fly?" The boy repeated this over and over again. How cute, right?
But as I noticed his blue Superman t-shirt, I began to see what he really meant. He was not questioning his ability to fly, but rather, he was asking for permission to show off the super powers that he knew he possessed.
He wasn't saying, "Mom, am I ABLE to fly?"
He was saying, "Mom, is this a good time for me to take off?"
So often when we want to do something, we start by asking the wrong question. We question our ability to do the thing, rather than believing in the unique gifts God has given us.
Most of the time though, it's not a question of ability. We already have the ability. We have the strength. We have the power. God took care of that. He makes certain that we are capable of far more than we realize. The question should be, "Is this a good time to use all He has given me?"
In other words, "Dad, am I clear for takeoff?"
